Buddhist Architecture in the Western Himalaya

The temples of Mangyu

The Village of Mangyu (Mang-rgyu) lies approx. 78km from Leh in a lonely and spectacular side valley of the Indus. The upper part of Mangyu today has its largest cluster of houses situated above a terrace of fields at an altitude of 3450 metres. This part of the village preserves the remains of a monastery which was surely once almost as magnificent as Alchi and also dates from the same periode.
